Construction of the grid
“In a sophisticated grid system not only the lines of text align with the picture but also the captions and the display letters, titles and subtitles.”
Josef Müller-Brockmann
Before constructing the grid, we must study all aspects of the design; format, the text and illustrations, the typeface and its size.
1 column for text and illustrations gives the designer too much freedom therefore a 2-column grid is better. One for text the other for illustrations.
We can divide a 2-column grid into 4-column grid when we need space for a lot of text and illustrations or where statistics have to be displayed with graphs.
3-column, offers more posibilities, different text and illustration sizes. Divide into a 6-column grid presents disavantages. The layout of the text becomes narrow and a smaller typeface will have to be used.
